Contractors Professional Liability
 In the past, most contractors did not have to worry about professional liability because there was a clear distinction between the design and construction of projects. The popularity of design/build brought with it the exposure to design professional liability. Even on projects that are not pure design/build, you can have a design exposure from design delegation. This occurs when the architect delegates to the general contractor design of HVAC, mechanical, or electrical. Even without design delegation, a contractor can have design exposure from shop drawings.
Other areas that may not be covered by your Commercial General Liability (CGL) policy but could be covered by a Contractor's Professional Liability policy include negligent supervision of subcontractors and errors or omissions in construction ways, means, and methods. The failure to supervise a subcontractor with the result of an improper installation that has to be redone is not a covered CGL liability exposure. Likewise, negligent performance of professional services that causes claims related to the ways, means, and methods systems process; or, safety responsibility of a contractor would not be covered by a CGL liability policy.

The Contractor's Professional Liability policy typically can also be expanded to pick up coverage for contractor's pollution liability caused by pollution conditions arising out of the construction activities performed by the contractor.
